History of Bayside

Bayside Cemetery Association was established Oct 14, 1865. The first 12 trustees were as follows: Bloomfield Usher, William W. Morgan, John H. Seeley, T. Sreatfield Clarkson, Edward Crary, E. D. Brooks, George Richards, Edward Hitchings, Aaron M. Deming, Harvey M. Story, H. C. Riggs, and Hiram H. Peck  It is an example of the Rural Cemetery movement. The consecration services were hold Oct 6, 1866. In 1867 15 acres were added.
Interment began in 1867. The graves with death dates before 1867 were moved from abandoned cemeteries in town like the Elderkin Cemetery. The Elderkin Cemetery was in Depot St. It had to be moved because of the Railroad. Another cemetery was on Willow Street.
Today Bayside is one of the three main cemeteries in Potsdam. The other two are St. Mary's and Garfield.

Introduction

This blog is about beautiful Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam NY.  Bayside Cemetery is like an outdoor museum about Potsdam. Most of the people buried there had an effect on Potsdam somehow.    In the summer of 2008 I started a project of taking photos and updating the listing that the St. Lawrence County Historical Association has that was done in the 1960's. Along the way I searched for the obits to see what I could find out about the people who are buried here. In this blog I will post the photos I take. I will also put the obituaries that I find from the Northern New York Historical Newspaper, Old Fulton NY Postcards, North County Now and Funeral Home websites.
